CHAPTER 7:  THE UNDERSTANDINGFreed from the burden of images, Sutherland discovers an unprecedented sensory reality: a world of sounds, breaths, and textures. He then enters an inner space he will later call the "cold, empty trapezoid"—a mental zone where the visible holds no power. Here, in this liberating void, he understands that the image is merely a superficial layer, a permanent illusion preventing access to deeper truth.

Without visual distraction, every sensation gains new intensity: the subtle echo of a step resonates within him, the breath of wind becomes tangible, the texture of a surface reveals invisible narratives. This place, at first cold and unfamiliar, gradually becomes a sanctuary. The initial chill turns to clarity. His blindness is now a doorway to purer, more authentic perception.
